President Trump recently announced plans to shrink two iconic territories of Utah — Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante. Bears Ears National Monument was established as such by President Obama in 2016, and Grand Staircase-Escalante was set as a national monument by President Clinton in 1996. Both territories are home to sprawling expanses of stunning rock formations and a vast array of wildlife, including endangered species, and they are also considered sacred lands by several Native American tribes, as the area holds the rich cultural history of their ancient ancestors, containing burial grounds, fossils, and ancient artifacts like cliff-side paintings.
Trump plans to shrink Bears Ears National Monument by an alarming 85 percent and Grand Staircase-Escalante by 45 percent, all for the goal of opening the land up to oil extraction, mining, and other commercial activities. Native American tribes have been at the forefront of the opposition for these greed-fueled plans, and a petition has been written to show solidarity for this fight.
To put matters into perspective, destroying these historically and culturally-significant lands held sacred by these indigenous tribes is comparable to the destruction of other sacred areas in the world like the Vatican or Jerusalem’s Western Wall.
Please take a moment to sign the petition in solidarity with these Native tribes and speak up to save these priceless indispensable public lands. As conscious Americans who respect our nation’s landscapes and ancient Native American cultures and beliefs, we all must speak out NOW before it is too late.
And please remember to share this with your network to increase awareness and support for this pressing cause!
