Say What? France Outlaws Vegetarian and Vegan Meals in Schools

france bans vegan vegetarian meals school

France has issued a governmental order mandating that all meals served in school canteens in France must contain animal products, and that meat and fish will be served at a certain minimum frequency. This implies that no vegetarian or vegan can eat at any public or private school in France (bringing lunch to school is not an option, since the government has also banned packed lunches).

France is planning to pass similar requirements for almost all forms of catering from kindergartens to hospitals, prisons and retirement homes.

So are vegan and vegetarian kids in France supposed to survive on french fries? REALLY?

Pourquoi… Pourquoi…

and what if someone had an allergy to meat?

Go figure that France needs to hold on to its history by writ of law… Lame.

The reasons vary for why people choose vegan. Here are two short videos to help everyone understand why so many are making this life-altering choice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKr4HZ7ukSE and http://www.veganvideo.org

I have been a vegan for a little over a year (vegetarian for a year and a half prior) and it breaks my heart to hear something like this. I shared this with one of my closest friends, who happens to be French. She has a sister, who is an omnivore but eats a lot of plant-based foods, who works as a director at one of the colleges in France. As far as she knows, vegetarianism/veganism is not being banned at the schools. Rather, France is encouraging people to go back to the traditional French way of eating, which means going back to eating wholesome food and cutting out the unprocessed food typical of the Standard American Diet, which has infiltrated many cultures. She said this is similar to the work that Jamie Oliver did for US schools. To her knowledge, there is no law prohibiting kids from eating vegetarian meals. It’s possible that EVANA misinterpreted the law and implied incorrect statements.

“So people aren’t allowed to decide for themselves what they eat anymore?” i wouldnt have a problem if they couldnt have the choice of meat at schools, especially since the gov spends money on healthcare. Obese people with heart disease and stuff = cost the gov money. But to force this is stupid

What the HELL is wrong with a packed lunch!?!? So foolish.

    • They are not allowed since they cannot be regulated. I know because I tried to bring some healthy treats for my toddler to have during her half-day play school – but non! C’est pas possible!

This could be another way for the increasingly conservative French government to target ethnic minorities. Traditional French cuisine is very meat and dairy heavy, and French culture holds its cuisine as a “sacred” part of French culture.

The more conservative people in France feel threatened by immigrants from Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Middle East. Many people from these regions are vegetarian.

France also banned headscarves, I see this as very much in line with that ban.

Avoid giving France your tourist dollars… There are many countries that you can visit that will treat you for who you are not what you eat… What kind of person made such a ridiculous decision???

Oops, I meant to specify, Paris is supposed to be the romantic city. Not France being a city. Gotta remember to proofread before hitting submit!

  10. avatar @aliadeta says:

Well that’s that. Unless this is revoked, I’m never travelling to Paris- it does NOT seem like the “city of romance” as it has always been painted to be. There is NOTHING romantic about force feeding everyone dead animals and their byproducts.

I completely agree with you. This is completely sick, crazy and outrages. OMG, that is impossible…. yet not surprising, the government really wants the citizens to be sick and obedient… a total oppression. Unfortunately, most ppl do not analyze, question or follow logic – they follow “suggestions” in the form of advertisement’s brainwashing and laws. This world will continue to be a screwed up place unless our actions will start follow a road of compassion, logic, kindness and reason.

Why is France descriminating against vegetarians? This is just shocking. Is it a plan to boost the meat industry? There can be no justification for this. It flies in the face of science, not to mention human rights. Children can easily get all the nutrition they need from a veggie diet. I can’t believe it’s legal under EU law. This is a form of child abuse.

  12. avatar natalie says:

This is a violation of human rights! Not only is choosing not to eat meat a belief but it can also be necessary for health. And what is a Muslim vegetarian suppose to do? Not cool France, not cool. I used to be in awe of France and wanted to move there some day. But not until they get their head out of the gutter.

  13. So people aren’t allowed to decide for themselves what they eat anymore?

  14. avatar Audrey says:

This is crazy?! I just don’t understand the logic.
