Oftentimes, sitting back and allowing wrong to be done to another living being is just as bad as doing the wrong oneself. This is the situation being presented in a petition calling for Trip Advisor to remove pages from their site that are promoting the enslavement and abuse of elephants, specifically a special elephant named Lasah.
Lasah is an “attraction,” at Langkawi Elephant Adventures (LEA) located in Kedah, Malaysia. Day in and day out, Lasah is worked with no end in sight. While he is making money for the humans that enslaved him, they have not even given Lasah the basic needs he deserves to at least live a mediocre life. This includes allowing him to stretch his legs and roam when he is not working, to sleep lying down, and access to mud and water. Additionally, Lasah needs to live with other elephants, he has been living all alone with no social interaction – an important part of elephant life.
The exploitation of elephants for human entertainment is in direct correlation with poaching. Most elephants used in the tourism industries are taken away from their mothers at a very young age and endure agonizing torture to be broken and trained. The tourism and trekking industries work hard at hiding these cruelties and many people are not educated enough about elephants to know that the conditions many of them live in are beyond cramped and unsanitary.
There are petitions and protests that have taken place to help get Lasah to a sanctuary called Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary so that he can either be rehabilitated and released or live a safe and comfortable life at the sanctuary. Organizations like Friends of the Orangutans Malaysia are working hard to help Lasah and other elephants like him but your help is needed. Sign the petition to send the message to Trip Advisor that allowing this cruelty to continue and elephants to be promoted as attractions is not at all, attractive.
