Sarah Orton, A Brief Life but a Large Heart for Animals

Sarah Orton, a Brief Life but a Large Heart for Animals

Every once in a while, a person comes along who makes an impact on the community around them and all in a very short amount of time. Five-year-old Sarah Orton was one of these unique and special people. At the innocent age of five, she already figured out giving rather than receiving was the way to go, especially when it came to the animals at the Baltimore Humane Society. Tragically, Sarah died suddenly this October, but not before sparking the catalyst to help more of Baltimore’s animals!

Sarah turned five back on May 15. For her birthday she did not ask for toys or even anything she could use personally. Instead, Sarah asked her family and friends a strange request. She asked that any gifts she received be cat or dog food so that she could donate the food to the Baltimore Humane Society. Sarah got her wish and just days after her fifth birthday, she delivered a number of bags of dog and cat food to the humane society.

Wendy Goldband, director of marketing and public relations for the Baltimore Humane Society, told The Baltimore Sun about Sarah’s heartwarming donation and how “it’s generosity like that that keeps the shelter open and running.”

Unfortunately, tragedy struck the Orton family earlier this month when Sarah became ill and passed away on Oct. 10.  She was never able to return to the animal shelter after she made her birthday donation. However, to continue Sarah’s natural generosity, her parents Chad and Kendra decided to create the Sarah Jayne Orton Memorial Foundation, where all donations go directly to the care of animals at Baltimore Humane Society’s no-kill shelter.

Goldband also revealed plans to commemorate Sarah with a plaque, which will be displayed in the dog kennel where she donated.

Sarah was like a small pebble thrown into a pond, a pebble that made a huge splash before disappearing and leaving ripples behind. Sarah has made a splash with her selflessness and generosity, and although she isn’t with us anymore, her ripples of generosity are sure to grow and provide for animals in the Baltimore area for years to come!
