Plant-based nutrition is taking over the world! Whether it be for health, environmental, or animal welfare concerns, more people than ever are adopting plant-based diets and identifying as vegan, vegetarian, or “flexitarian.” Attitudes regarding the meat industry are changing thanks to education. Nearly half of Americans surveyed said they support a ban on slaughterhouses, nearly half of millennials surveyed ditch meat for environmental concerns, and Generation Z is following in their footsteps. As a result of this, businesses have begun to make changes to meet this societal shift in dietary habits. Many dairy plants have shut down or switched to producing plant-based milks, meat giants like Tyson have invested in animal-free meats, restaurants that adopt all-vegan menus have seen an increase in sales of up to 1,000 percent, and new all-vegan products, brands, and markets are popping up left and right. And now San Diego has its first all-vegan market!
Mission Square Market was once a general store, and in just a month’s time, has become entirely vegan. The market will carry some of our favorite brands like Miyoko’s, Violife, and Herbivorous Butcher, and the deli will serve up customer favorites like plant-based Philly cheesesteaks. The market will be hosting a launch event June 3, 2018 that will feature a number of yummy samples from vegan brands.
In addition, Mission Square Market has begun hosting vegan-focused events like the Vegan Business Exchange (a group that supports and connects vegan businesses in San Diego) and Wellness Wednesdays where local experts share their knowledge about plant-based living. The market also hopes to expand in the future.
