She enjoys coming up with new plant based dishes, taking pictures of those dishes to put up on Instagram with a great filter and some pertinent hashtags and then eating those dishes. Yeah, she’s that person. She also likes to tell people she’s been drinking almond milk since before it was cool, has a small thrift store addiction and cannot pass up a garage sale. She lives with her two kids, two dogs and husband in the wild west. Read more about JJ Dolm Read More
When a passerby saw that a wombat in Victoria, Australia had been struck by a car, something told her to stop and make sure the animal wasn’t carrying offspring. Sadly, the poor mother didn’t survive, but sure enough, her tiny baby was still alive in her pouch. Knowing that she needed to call an expert to rescue the little survivor, the passerby called a local wildlife hotline. Ranger and volunteer rescuer Kim Hunter responded and after taking one look at the tiny creature she decided to foster her herself.
Naming her Leah, she was close to the same tragic fate as her mother when she was discovered. Hunter said of her condition at the time, “She’s very lucky, although she was uninjured she was cold to the touch and I’d say she was only a few hours away from dying.” Needing constant care, Hunter fed Leah every four hours around the clock until her weight more than doubled from a tiny 300 grams to a heartier 650 grams. Due to encroachment by humans into their habitats, wombats are often at risk for being hit by cars due to their habit of grazing near roadways.
Since her picture went public, Leah has taken the internet by storm with people photoshopping her into all kinds of crazy scenarios. How can you resist, just look at that sweet and sassy face! This inspired us to think about who Leah would like to pose with if she had that choice and we definitely think it would be people who help animals like her. If it wasn’t for the care and thoughtfulness of the people who rescued her, Leah wouldn’t be here. Though you should always contact a professional when you discover a wild animal that needs help, Leah’s story shows that we can all be a Green Monster and make a difference for an animal in need.
