Southern bottlenose whales are a rare breed of marine mammals who make their homes in the waters of the Antarctic circle. Once in a while, however, they venture north to the waters off the coast of New Zealand, seeking squid and krill, two of their favorite foods. As any seasoned whale watcher can tell you, whales, like any other wild animals, can be very unpredictable. So imagine the surprise of this Whites Island Tours group when this elusive bunch decided to put on a show for them!

With our oceans being threatened by plastic trash, oil drilling, overfishing, radiation, and other forms of pollution, it is easy to become overwhelmed by problems that seem unsolvable. Yet the sight of one of the ocean’s most beautiful creatures simply enjoying its life, reminds us, that no matter how daunting of a task it seems, our oceans, the lifeline of our planet, can and must be saved!
