Need Help Buying Seasonal Organic Produce? There's an App for That (Farmanac!)

Ever been standing in the grocery store pondering whether you should spring for those organic apples? Or maybe you just want to stay abreast of which fruits and vegetables are at their peak in your region.

Well for all you health-conscious iPhone holders out there, Farmanac is a must-try app!

Farmanac is a guide for selecting and storing fruits and vegetables. With over 1,400 items in the database, this app is an incredibly comprehensive and useful source of information!

You can either browse through the database or search by PLU or item name to find the item you’re seeking. Most entries include the following information:

  1. Pesticide score (and a recommendation for buying organic vs. conventional)
  2. Some history and other general information about the item
  3. Selection tips
  4. Storage tips
  5. A guide for when the item is in season in regions across the U.S. and Canada

It’s pretty simple but quite useful! If it sounds like something you’d use, you’re in luck…

A few lucky One Green Planet readers can try this app for free!

Simply tell us in the comments section below why we should send YOU a promo code to download the app at no charge!

I would use for learning seasonal fruit. I would love to buy seasonal fruits avoiding out of season flown in from other countries !

  2. A lot of us are unaware of the fact that our ancestors had no choice but to eat only veggies and fruits that were available at any particular time of the year, i.e., seasonal produce. It shouldn’t be a surprise to us that it is fresher than produce that has been stored to distribute to stores out-of-season, and charge a premium for them, and have them not very tasty, anyway. Obviously, these in-season foods are fresher, have a longer shelf life once you get them home, and they are worth your time and trouble to find them. Any App that helps track these great foods down is gold! We ALL need it!

Unless it’s in season locally and I can see it as I drive by the fields and pick-your-own farms, I often have no idea what’s in season around the world. I’m still a little blurry about the dirty dozen and althought I generally choose organic in the produce section, sometimes it’s not available or ridiculously expensive. It’s nice to know where my produce selections are coming from, how fresh they are when they get here and what to do with them when I get them home. I might also explore new fruits and veggies by checking out this app. I would totally love to have a “buddy app” at the grocery store or farmer’s market.

I try and save money when I can, so I’d love to know when to buy organic and when to buy coventionally grown produce. Also, I’d love to know what produce is at it’s peak in my area (in season produce always tastes better!).
