A petition targeted at Derbyshire Police’s Rural Crime Team has been launched to help find a group of young men in Chesterfield, England who took in a kitten to use as bait for other animals.
These fine examples of what it means to be human took a tiny tortoiseshell kitten, snared her legs with plastic ties, and wrapped her in black masking tape with the intent of using it with hunting dogs and ferrets. It seems the idea was to use the kitten’s distressed, helpless cries to lure in wild animals for their own to hunt. How remarkable a feat it is for a gang of thugs to inflict such cruelty to a defenseless animal; these men must be so proud of themselves.
Thankfully for this kitten, a passerby noticed the group of men and what they were doing and was able to rescue it, even offering it a safe home after its ordeal. Officers from Derbyshire Police’s Rural Crime Team have posted pictures of the poor taped-up kitten on their social media and attracted the expected outrage from animal lovers online. One such user wrote: “This is utterly appalling. I am ashamed to be a human being with other humans besmirching humanity like this. I could cry.”
The rural crime team said: “We are appealing for help to Identify four or five males who had a small kitten which had its feet bound with cable ties and its body bound with masking-type tape.” The wildlife officers involved said that among the group abusing the animal was one man with a swallow tattoo on his neck, while the remainder had tattoos on their hands. All were described as wearing tracksuits and were believed to be aged in their 20s or 30s.
Kitten baiting is sadly nothing new, with kittens often used in dog fighting rings. The organizers of such rings often stoop so low as to scroll through adverts of “free to good home” pets to either add more dogs to their rings or more cats and kittens to encourage their fighting. Kittens and cats are even being sold on Facebook as bait! While we are very relieved that this particular kitten has been saved from such a fate, we cannot help thinking of all the others out there that still need helping.
Derbyshire Police’s Rural Crime Team have already asked members of the public to come forward with any information they might have about this Chesterfield gang. This petition urges the team to continue their search for this group of men to save any future kittens or other animals from a similar fate.
