A four-year-old Labrador Retriever-Pit Bull mix was recently found after wandering a rural Georgia road for weeks. A kind person thankfully stopped and called Caroline Claffey, a volunteer with the Cherokee County Humane Society for help. The condition of the dog, now named Kiah (meaning “new beginnings”), was heartbreaking, to say the least.
Caroline immediately noticed that Kiah was scared and pregnant. More than likely, the dog lived in someone’s backyard, where she was forced to have several litters of puppies. Her teeth are either broken or flat, indicating they either filed her teeth down intentionally or Kiah chewed the bars of her cage in frustration. What’s more, when the veterinarian x-rayed Kiah, shotgun pellets were found near her spine.
To add even more heartbreak to this story, when an emergency C-section was performed to save Kiah’s puppies, the entire litter were already dead inside of her. Kiah doesn’t understand what happened to her babies and in an attempt to help, Caroline gave Kiah stuffed animals to comfort her. In the above video, you can see Kiah snuggle and lays down in her bed with them. Devastating!
“When I first put them in her box, I couldn’t tell if she liked them or if she was just upset that I was putting things in her box with her. But I went up to check on her a couple of hours later and she had gathered them all close to her and had her head resting on them. And if I moved them she would follow them. So, that’s helping her a little bit,” Claffey told 11 alive.
We hope that with time, Kiah will be able to put her traumatic past behind her and will find a loving, forever home. If you happen to come across a dog or cat, or any other animal in need, check out these Animal Rescue Hotlines. You could save a life.
