The beagle is one of the most eager-to-please, trusting, and tolerant breeds there are. These wonderful qualities have brought these small dogs many devoted admirers and a status of one of the most popular breeds – but it also brought terrible suffering inflicted during the practice of laboratory testing. Every year, between 70,000 and 75,000 dogs are used for research in the U.S. The majority of them are beagles.

Lara Trump, President’s daughter-in-law, however, it hoping to change this reality by supporting the work of Beagle Freedom Project (BFP). Lara is known for her love of dogs, she and her husband Eric have two rescued beagles. One of their pup’s, Ben was rescued after being found in the horrific condition in San Antonio.

In addition to being an advocate for adoption, Lara recently spoke at Beagle Freedom’s Annual Red, White & Beagle Fundraiser, on May 3, 2017, in Washington D.C.

BFP is currently working to pass their Beagle Freedom Bill aiming to secure a release of laboratory dogs and other animals already subjected to testing, so they can use all the political sway and influence they can get! Once rescued from the laboratories, the animals would finally have a chance to have a normal happy life. The bill is already a law in five states and, if BFP’s struggles are successful, will be so in all of the U.S. At the moment, the awful standard procedure is to kill the animals who are no longer used in tests.

“After everything these animals endure in tax-payer financed research, BFP believes they deserve the right to be released,” says BFP’s Founder and President, Shannon Keith, as reported by Market Wired. “Red, White, & Beagle is our kick-off event for a concerted federal effort to offer basic protection for the survivors of experiments, and it demonstrates that this issue has the power to unify everyone, regardless of party, politics, or even last name.”

On her Instagram profile, Lara Trump posted a picture of her own two beagles, calling for those who also love the breed to join her at the event.

Regardless of your political affiliation or how you feel about the Trump Presidency, it is great to see Lara Trump using her platform to support laboratory animals and join those who work to end their suffering. We hope that this is not the last time we see something so uplifting coming from the family – perhaps it would not be too much to wish that Lara Trump’s influence rubs off on the President resulting in more support for animal issues overall.
