Welcoming a companion animal into your home is a lifelong commitment. However, many people don’t seem to understand that. It’s something that you may have even witnessed: your neighbor moves away, leaving their outdoor cat behind without a reliable source of food and without shelter. Between abandonment and feral cat populations, there are millions of homeless pets in the United States, and that’s a huge problem. Waffles the cat is one such kitty who lost his home when his family moved and left him behind. Lucky for him, his former family’s neighbor, Imgur user SplitChickadee, realized that the cat was on his own and set out to help.

When the orange kitty named Waffles was abandoned by his family, Imgur user SplitChickadee built him a shelter

When winter set in, Waffles set up residence in the shelter.

As the temperatures grew colder, SplitChickadeee knew the shelter wouldn’t suffice, so they set up a happenin’ cat pad for Waffles in their garage.

Thanks to SplitChickadee’s compassion for this abandoned kitty, Waffles never went cold or hungry.

Waffles even grew attached to his adoptive hoomans and would look longingly after them when they left for work in the morning.

Waffles may have a pretty sweet set-up right now, but we hope he finds a brand new forever home soon. It’s thanks to one human’s compassion for an abandoned kitty that he’ll never have to scrounge for food or huddle for warmth in the outdoors again.

This is confusing. Did he find a forever home or is this not it? It's very nice that the neighbor made sure the kitty lived through the winter, but does he need a home? Flyers should be posted to find him a home

Interesting how this post was titled "Ahhhh people can be great!" but sadly that contradicts this story. Yes, it's lovely that someone built a shelter but the people who left the cat behind are certainly not great. What kind of person does that, not only a cruel act upon a defenseless animal but it just transfers the problem to someone else. Far to often people welcome pets into their home only to abandon them later when things get tough or "inconvenient".

We got our boy after the neighbours moved and left him behind. That was 7 years ago, and we love him to bits!

Why don't they just adopt him?

I have a lovely heated cat bed if someone wants it. I have no idea how much shipping would be.

I think this is wonderful that people are doing this. However, if you cannot keep the cat, it's best to take them to a NO KILL shelter for the winter. Make an effort to catch the stray at least, and give them the opportunity for adoption if you cannot take them in.

Same thing happened to me. He wouldn't come in for awhile but when he finally did he decided to stay...sadly he got sick & very quickly passed away today, my son tried giving him chest compressions while I called the vet. We are devastated and miss him already. He was such a good boy.
