Despite being classified as a felony in all 50 states, dog fighting still occurs on a grand scale. Pit bulls are regularly the breed of choice for dog fighters who breed the dogs specifically for fighting purposes. Often starved and physically abused in order to make them aggressive, these dogs are trained to obey orders to fight for the kill. So-called “bait” dogs are used in dog fighting operations, and as a petition on Care2 points out, the more docile and good-natured dogs typically become the chosen targets.
One of these former bait dogs is a sweet soul who was named Liam by rescuers from the Streetdog Foundation after they found him last August abandoned in a warehouse in South Memphis covered in hundreds of bite marks. Liam was so severely injured he could not walk on his paws, his left eye was swollen shut, and the open wounds all over his body were a testament to his unimaginable suffering.
The petition is calling on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of this brutal case of animal abuse and neglect and prosecute the guilty parties to the full extent of the law. Please take a moment to sign the petition here.
If you ever suspect dog fighting is going on in your area, do not hesitate to contact authorities and leave an anonymous tip. Your intervention could help save the lives of innocent dogs like Liam. To learn more about what you can do to combat dog fighting, check this out.
And please remember to share this with your friends and family to increase support for Liam and other dogs like him used in dog fighting operations.
