When the wild animal rescue, Born Free USA was approached by the Bulgarian government to help find a home for the last two circus lions in the country, the team leapt into action. The lions were sharing an 8×8-square-foot metal circus trailer, with little room to move and limited access to water.  Their muscles were stiff from the lack of exercise and there was little shade as summer was well on its way.

Working with the charity Four Paws, rescuers were able to bring the lions to the award-winning Shamwari Game Reserve on the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where they are now able to enjoy acres of bush, with views across the reserve. The world for these two former circus lions will be much brighter than their previous lives, spent looking out from the bars of their cage. At the sanctuary, they will enjoy the best standard of care and have the space to roam and explore.

Check out the video above to watch the full rescue and rehabilitation of these magnificent animals.
