Would you believe that a substance derived from a chemical originally created by the Nazis to kill humans is now being sprayed onto our nation’s fruits, vegetables, and other farm-grown food items? Shockingly, it’s the truth: Chlorpyrifos, the nasty substance in question, has been turned from a weapon of war into a liberally used insecticide by pesticide giant Dow Chemical. Unsurprisingly, scientific studies have linked this chemical and others in its class to brain damage, respiratory issues, reduced IQ and attention deficit disorder, convulsions and even death in those who come into contact with significant amounts of it — namely, farmworkers and children.

Yet even with concrete evidence exhibiting the host of negative health impacts directly related to the use of chlorpyrifos on crops, EPA Chief Scott Pruitt reportedly said earlier this year that the federal agency would not ban the highly toxic pesticide. On the contrary, Pruitt and the rest of the Trump administration are doing everything they can to cover up the scientific studies connecting the pesticide with adverse health effects and keep citizens in the dark.

Given the unwillingness of the EPA to protect the health and well-being of the American people, it seems as if state government officials may have no choice but to take it upon themselves to ban chlorpyrifos in their individual states. Recently, lawmakers in Hawaii did just that by prohibiting the use of the hazardous chemical on fruits, vegetables and other crops grown in the state. This is a major victory that sets a precedent for the rest of the U.S. states to follow in Hawaii’s footsteps.

Until chlorpyrifos has been banned nationwide, we need all the help we can get to dismantle Dow Chemical’s production of the unsafe chemical by urging state governments to pay attention to this important issue.

If you’d like to help seek justice for the farmworkers and children who’ve been affected by chlorpyrifos and ensure a healthier future free of this poisonous chemical for our nation’s citizens, please sign this Care2 petition opposing the continued use of chlorpyrifos. By coming together to speak out against dangerous pesticides and the greedy corporations and individuals that facilitate their production and use, we have the power to make our country a happier and healthier place to call home.
