Hearts are breaking everywhere for a sweet German Shepherd named Kal who was hit by a car in South Texas on Thursday, July 13, 2017. He had wandered onto a highway with his dog friend, who tragically died at the scene of the accident. Kal was left with serious injuries including a punctured lung and a gruesome eye injury that had his left eye out of its socket.

Kal’s guardian was unable to pay for the necessary emergency medical treatment, so concerned people contacted Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, a non-profit dedicated to saving homeless and injured animals.

Upon examination, it was discovered Kal was heartworm positive and had tick disease, which caused his blood count to be low. To combat this, he was given a blood transfusion before surgery to remove his damaged eye.

Luckily, this beautiful canine survived surgery and is being watched carefully at the hospital. Kal certainly has a fighting spirit, and we hope he regains strength and his condition continues to improve.

Kal’s medical bills have already totaled several thousand dollars, and he still has a long road to recovery. If you are touched by Kal’s story, please consider making a donation to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC.

And please share this story with your network to gain more support for Kal and as a reminder why dogs should never be allowed to roam outside unattended.

And yet another irresponsible owner who didn\'t think it necessary to administer heartworm medicine to his "beloved" pet. It\'s bad enough this dog was running loose with a friend that died, I\'m also wondering if that owner had Kal neutered. I really hope this poor dog doesn\'t pay for his owner\'s stupidity with his life. Rescue Dogs Rock is a great organization and I thank them for again stepping in to help an animal in dire need.

Kal\'s so-called owner should have been sent to jail for animal neglect and abuse.
