Shark populations have been on a drastic decline due to the fact 100 million sharks are killed every year, with 73 million of them being carelessly de-finned for the highly controversial dish, shark fin soup. Although there have been improvements regarding this, such as dozens of airlines banning the shipment of shark fins, there are still laws in place that allow the import of these animal parts.
According to a petition on Care2 written by Bite-Back, a UK-based shark, and marine conservation group, European law currently allows the importation of 20 kilograms of shark fins per person, which has a black market value of over $5,000. That amount is the equivalent to over 44 pounds, which is enough to make over 700 bowls of shark fin soup.
This is hardly a believable amount for personal consumption, and with shark fin soup fetching up to $100 a bowl, this law is undoubtedly fueling the greedy trade that has 25 percent of the world’s shark populations classified as endangered and nearing extinction. The petition explains the European Union has already banned the importation of dolphin and whale meat, sea horses, and sea cucumbers, so why are they allowing such large quantities of shark fins to be imported?
If you are concerned about the world’s shark populations disappearing, please take a moment to sign this petition demanding that the European Union put a ban on all shipments of shark fins. As evident by all the airlines and governments that have already banned shark fin shipments, public opinion has the power to create serious change, so please share this with friends and ask them to join you in saving the world’s sharks!
