Theila the dog was hit by a car, but that is hardly where her pain and suffering ended. Noting that Theila had sustained serious injuries, the driver proceeded to beat the dog’s head with a hammer in an attempt to “put her out of her misery.” Once Theila was unconscious, the driver presumed she was dead and took her to a nearby field to bury her.
Four days after she had “died,” Theila dug her way out of the grave and wandered onto a farm where she was discovered. The poor dog was covered with dirt and severely emaciated, but she was alive and even wagging her tail.
Her rescuers immediately rushed the dog to Washington State’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. It was determined that Theila had sustained a dislocated jaw, broken nasal cavity, and a few leg injuries. Through all of her treatment, Theila continued to plant kisses all over her caretakers and vigorously wag her tail with happiness. It did not take long for the hospital’s staff to fall for Theila.
After seeing Theila’s photo on Facebook, Sara Mellado offered to foster the sweet one-year-old Pit Bull-mix. Given their affinity for Theila, Washington State’s Vet Hospital’s Good Samaritan committee donated $700 to help cover medical costs.
“Considering everything that she’s been through, she’s incredibly gentle and loving,” said Sara Mellado. “She’s a true miracle dog and she deserves a good life.”
Theila’s jaw has healed on its own, but her breathing is still greatly hindered by her collapsed nasal cavity. Vets recommended that she have surgery to repair the damage, so Mellado launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the $3,000 needed for the procedure.
In one month, Mellado’s campaign was fully funded and she has now raised a total of $22,580! Thanks to these generous donations, Theila is set to receive the surgery and all the care she will need well into the future.
We are so pleased to see this very happy ending for Theila! Good luck with your new life, pup!
