This story is one of a truly brave and loyal dog and her friend. These two pups got themselves into a potentially terrible situation in their hometown in Washington State, but fortunately, made it out alive together.
Tillie the Setter and Phoebe the Basset Hound wandered away from their family’s property and when they did not return, it raised serious alarm with their guardians. Days went by without a sign of the two dogs, leading their family to seek out the help of a local animal rescue organization, Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP).
After a week of searching, VIPP received a call that finally led them to the missing pups.
As it turns out, Phoebe had fallen into a cistern in a ravine nearby the neighbor’s home.
Rather than sitting and waiting to be discovered, Tillie took it upon herself to head out each day in search for help. After visiting the same home a few times, seemingly entreating the attention of the people who lived there and then quickly darting off back to the ravine, Tillie left enough breadcrumbs for the people she had been in contact with to seek out help for the dog.
VIPP explains, “we received a call from a community member reporting that for the past few days a ‘reddish’ dog had been coming up to them when they were out on their property and then promptly heading back into a ravine.”
Using this clue, rescuers set out for the ravine and were overjoyed to find the two pups waiting for help!
It is truly incredible to see the loyalty and bravery that Tillie exhibited in helping to save her best friend. It just goes to show how intelligent and complex our animal friends can be!
