Coconut Oil Could Help Fight Tooth Decay

From energy metabolism to cardiovascular health; antibacterial and antimicrobial properties to boosting athletic performance; coconut oil has a long list of health benefits. And the list just got a little bit longer!

According to new research from Ireland’s Athlone Institute of Technology, coconut oil could also help prevent dental cavities.

For the study, the research team tested the impact of coconut oil, vegetable oil and olive oil in their natural states and when treated with enzymes, on various types of bacteria.

They found that coconut oil treated with enzymes stopped the growth of Streptococcus bacteria, which is a major contributor to tooth decay.

Researchers believe these findings could have important implications for the future of dental care. Study researcher Dr. Damien Brady noted: ”Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations.”

A natural alternative to chemical additives? Sounds good to us!
