This video was posted in the dead of winter, but this American Woodcock still has plenty of pep in his step. His hopping and bopping moves appear to be a mating dance, but with snow on the ground, it seems a little early for that.
There have been other dancing woodcock videos on YouTube before, but uploader Bill Hubick is the first to put it to the Champs’ rock-and-roll hit “Tequila,” which syncs up perfectly with the little bird’s upbeat dance steps. Without the music, he might make a nasally “peent” sound to attract mates.
Who knew that the elusive woodcock could be so interesting? Its’ dull feathers blend into its woodland habitat, so many might dismiss this bird as boring. But this feathered friend has other surprises in his mating dance routine, including an aerial portion.
You can find this funny bird across eastern North America, living in fields and young forests with lots of open air space.
