Food manufacturers are moving away from unhealthy oils and fats and embracing healthier sources of fat like coconut and avocado, according to a new report.
While many companies are still using more traditional oils like canola oil, corn, and soy, a number of food manufacturers are seeing the demand for trendy, healthier oils like coconut oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, and avocado oil, according to a report from Prepared Foods.
Consumers are looking for more healthy oil options like olive oil and avocado oil, but manufacturers are trying to strike a balance between health and versatility, according to Food Dive. For example, olive oil is difficult to use in products that need a high-heat production, because of its lower smoke point compared to other oils.
Prepared Foods also predicted that rice bran oil could gain traction in U.S. food production, with its high smoke point and high amount of vitamin E.
Recent years have seen the releases of more snack products using healthier fats and healthier oils, such as Good Health Avocado Oil Potato Chips and Boulder Canyon Olive Oil Chips. Avocado oil is even making its way into salad dressings, such as Primal Kitchen’s Ranch Dressing with Avocado Oil.
