Guide: Vegan Meat Substitutes

OneGreenPlanet.Org / January 10, 2011 / 31 Comments

meat substitutes, fake meat, vegetarian meat, vegan meat

Who says going vegan means giving up your favorite foods and surviving on salad? You can live without the cruel and unsustainable choice of consuming animal flesh without having to give up flavors and tastes you’re familiar with. Plant-based meat substitutes are healthier (especially if you make them from scratch at home), completely cruelty-free, and often taste exactly like the real thing. Great for vegetarians too.

Don’t know where to start? Check out the table below:

My favorite products are Boca Vegan burgers, Smart Dogs, and anything by Gardein (especially their seven-grain chicken tenders).

  2. avatar Hector Omar says:

I prefer not to use the term “meat substitute”. Meat is not for humans so we do not have to substitute it.

    Isn’t Yves genetically engineered soy?

    • avatar Moi says:

Yes, it is! A lot of the stuff on this list is GMO. VERY irresponsible. I think the authors of this website need to do some more homework before recommending Frankensoy products. Choose Organic or certified Non-GMO products.

    • avatar RedOnTheHead says:

I just emailed Yves to ask about the GMO thing, but I think they may be. I know that both Amy’s Kitchen and Upton’s both advertise that they are not. I agree with ‘Moi’ as well. The authors of this post were very irresponsible to promote GMO distributors. We obviously come here looking for healthier alternatives, so posting something like that was ill-researched and misleading.

  5. avatar Sarah Harmon says:

Do you have recipes for any of these items? I have made seitan from scratch, but it is a laborious process! Many of these brands aren’t available in my area, and the ones that are have a hard time squeezing their way into my budget. Any ideas?
